CDC Releases COVID-19 Driver Safety Tips

If you aren’t already using a fully electronic driver and compliance management system, that can also be an effective way of reducing the use of paper – while also ensuring that all files are compliant and available from any computer or mobile device.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) released guidance aimed at helping motor carriers protect drivers and maintain a healthy work environment during the COVID-19 pandemic. As re-opening continues, and drivers are in contact with greater numbers of people, it will become increasingly important for both drivers and employers to take steps that will reduce transmission – and ensure the health and overall wellbeing of the entire company.

Spreading Awareness

As an employer, the CDC recommends educating drivers (and everyone in your business) about COVID-19: how it’s spread, the risk of exposure and steps individuals can take to protect themselves. Employees should understand the importance of social distancing whether they’re in the workplace or on the road – and should be encouraged to stay home if they feel sick.

If someone in the company has been exposed to the virus, it’s important to share that information with employees as soon as possible so that they can quarantine themselves as needed.

Providing Protective Equipment

Employers should provide all drivers with personal protective equipment so that they don’t have to borrow things like vests, safety glasses or hard hats from shippers while on the road. All cabs should be outfitted with hand sanitizer, tissues, a small trash can and face masks, as well.

If ride-alongs or team driving can’t be avoided, the CDC also recommends installing a removable barrier between the driver and passenger. If there is a sleeper berth in the cab, a separation between sleeping areas should also be installed.

Go Paperless

Adopting technologies that allow for contactless deliveries or virtual training sessions (for example) will limit in-person contact while ensuring that you and your drivers are able to meet your business’ goals successfully. With the FMCSA announcing that offsite audits will be the primary audit method throughout the pandemic, it has become increasingly important to have as many documents ready for electronic transmission as possible.

Help Protect Drivers

For long-haul drivers, especially, who will need to make stops along their route, the CDC recommends contacting truck stops, rest areas and hotels to both ensure facilities are open and that they are following the recommended safety practices. By doing so, you’ll help drivers plan their routes more effectively – while ensuring that they are able to get plenty of rest.
