August 2023: What’s New in Safety & DOT Compliance
Mariah Barr
4 mins read

Welcome to the dog days of summer, when the mercury spikes and the roads get so hot you could fry an egg on them. Even though we’d all prefer to be poolside right about now, we can’t afford to ignore our DOT compliance responsibilities. Here are some of the biggest safety events for August 2023 – and beyond.

Check out the complete 2023 safety calendar here.

2nd Quarter IFTA Filings Due on July 31, 2023

Second-quarter IFTA filings are due July 31, 2023.

Reminder, the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) is a tax collection agreement in the US and Canada that aims to simplify how truckers and trucking companies pay taxes on fuel.

Are you struggling with keeping track of your fuel purchases? Give us a shout. Foley offers affordable programs to help motor carriers meet their IFTA quarterly reporting obligations.

The next deadline is October 31, 2023, which will be here before you know it.

Foley knows IFTA inside out! Let us help you navigate it.

Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over: August 16 – September 4, 2023

“Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” is an annual enforcement event aimed at preventing impaired driving among motorists and truck drivers.

This year, it goes into effect across the country from August 16 to September 4, 2023. During this time, law enforcement steps up their efforts in searching for drunk drivers—all in the hopes that these increased efforts will serve as a deterrent as well.

According to the NHTSA, one person is killed about every 52 minutes in a drunk-driving crash. That amounts to more than 10,000 people each year. The timing of this annual event is no coincidence, either. Sadly, drunk-driving deaths increase over Labor Day weekend.

Now’s an excellent time to make sure you’re up to date with the latest happenings in drug and alcohol testing. This Foley article is a great place to start.

Brake Safety Week: August 20 – August 26, 2023

This week-long enforcement initiative kicks off on August 20 this year. The sponsor of the event—the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA)—notes that during this week “commercial motor vehicle inspectors conduct brake system inspections (primarily Level IV Inspections) on large trucks and buses throughout North America to identify brake-system violations.”

Don’t let the name “Brake Safety Week” fool you, however. While the emphasis is on brake systems, inspectors will be conducting full roadside inspections during the event. Here’s what you can expect.

Start Preparing for Annual DOT Compliance Requirements

Once we get past Labor Day, it’s a hop, skip, and a jump to Q4 and all those end-of-year DOT requirements.

Do what you promise yourself you’re going to do every year and don’t wait until the last minute to complete annual requirements, like Clearinghouse queries.

Or better yet—get on an automated system like the Foley Platform so you don’t even have to think about it! Get a free DOT compliance software demo today or fill out the form for more information on our solution.
