CVSA Announces 2024 International Roadcheck Focus Areas
Mariah Barr
4 mins read

Having a solid drug and alcohol testing program in place will go a long way during this year's inspection event.

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has announced that the highly anticipated International Roadcheck will occur on May 14-16 this year. This three-day initiative, spanning across Canada, Mexico, and the US, aims to ensure compliance with commercial motor vehicle regulations and promote roadway safety.

During International Roadcheck, CVSA-certified law enforcement personnel will conduct thorough inspections of commercial motor vehicles and drivers at various locations, including weigh/inspection stations, temporary sites, and mobile patrols. The focus areas for this year's International Roadcheck will be tractor protection systems and alcohol and controlled substance possession.

The issue of controlled substance and alcohol possession/use remains a significant concern for companies that employ DOT-regulated drivers. CVSA highlights the increasing number of prohibited drivers listed in the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse, which currently stands at 158,330 drivers as of the most recent monthly report released in December. This represents a staggering annual increase of over 30% from the previous year.

Preparing for International Roadcheck & New 2024 Clearinghouse Regulations

In light of these statistics, CVSA hopes that International Roadcheck 2024 will serve as a reminder to companies with regulated drivers to establish and strictly enforce clear policies to prevent controlled substance and alcohol possession or use in the workplace. Additionally, owner-operators, Safety Managers, and Compliance Managers are encouraged to regularly query the FMCSA Clearinghouse to ensure their drivers are not in a prohibited status.

As a reminder, a new FMCSA Clearinghouse regulation will be officially passed on November 18, 2024, that will directly impact drivers with this prohibited status in the Clearinghouse. Those who still have this status will have their CDLs/CLPs revoked or denied.

Our informative webinar on 2/22 will dive into this new regulation and how you can avoid pulling your drivers off the road as a result.

Learning from International Roadcheck Inspection Results

The data collected during the 72 hours of International Roadcheck will be carefully analyzed, and the results will be released to the public later this summer. This information will provide valuable insights into compliance levels and help identify areas for improvement in the transportation industry.
