As you may recall, speeding is the same theme as Operation Safe Driver Week 2022, but that just means it’s still a major problem on the roadways.
Drivers of both commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) and passenger vehicles should take extra precautions during the safety event, and work to become more aware of their driving habits on a regular basis.
Throughout the second week of July, law enforcement will be on the lookout for CMV and passenger vehicle drivers engaging in risky or dangerous driving behaviors. Unsafe drivers can expect to be pulled over and issued a citation or warning.
In 2020 there were 11,258 fatal crashes in the U.S. that involved at least one speeding driver, which made up 29% of the total traffic fatalities for the year.
“The rising fatalities on our roadways are a national crisis; we cannot and must not accept these deaths as inevitable,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
During last year's safety event, law enforcement personnel pulled over 24,934 CMVs and 9,053 passenger vehicles, resulting in 33,987 total traffic-enforcement situations in the US alone.
As for the consequences of these interactions, passenger vehicle drivers received 7,445 warnings and 9,531 citations, and CMV drivers received 4,742 warnings and 3,104 citations.
It’s clear that unsafe driving habits aren't going away. In an effort to reduce them, officers will be on the lookout for offenders in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico during this year's Operation Safe Driver Week.
During Operation Safe Driver Week, officers will not only issue warnings and citations for speeding, but also for following other vehicles too closely, distracted driving, drunk or impaired driving, and other unsafe driving practices.
Now that this year's enforcement event is nearly a month away, it's time to encourage your drivers to be aware of their habits while behind the wheel of your company vehicles, as well as their personal vehicles.
