June 2023: What’s New in Safety & DOT Compliance
Mariah Barr
6 mins read

Summer is almost here and so is a long list of awareness initiatives, fun and informative industry events, and an important compliance registration deadline.

June is National Safety Month. This National Safety Council observance has four themes – one for each week of the month – to encourage awareness of on-the-job and off-the-job safety. This year’s focuses are emergency preparedness; slips, trips, and falls; heat-related illnesses; and hazard recognition.

There are also a few specific days in June worth highlighting. June 6th is National Secure Your Load Day, emphasizing the importance of properly securing cargo before getting on the road. National Forklift Safety Day is June 13th, promoting forklift best practices for improved safety. National Ride to Work Day is held on June 19th, representing the high number of diverse motorcyclists regularly taking to the streets. Be sure to drive with extra caution on that day!

Upcoming June Safety Events

With the start of summer just around the corner, now is the time to check out the industry’s upcoming events taking place around the country.

Electric Utility Fleet Managers Conference (EUFMC)

Hosted at the Williamsburg Lodge and Conference Center in Williamsburg, VA on June 4-7 is the 69th annual EUFMC. Fleets that operate utility equipment are encouraged to attend the educational conference. This year’s theme is “Driving Safety, Sustainability & Technical Expertise,” which will be bolstered by presentations by industry experts, manufacturers, and fleet executives.

A few of the topics and presenters include Brian L. Wolff, Chief Strategy Officer and Executive Vice President, Public Policy and External Affairs at Edison Electric Institute (EEI), as well as the Iron Cowboy, James Lawrence, as the dinner speaker. The first Women in Utility Fleet gathering will also happen at this year's event. You can register for the conference here.

National Motor Freight Transport Association Meeting

The second meeting for NMFTA members will be hosted at the Hyatt Regency Lake Washington in Renton, WA from June 4-7. Click here to register for the meeting.

2023 ASSP Professional Development Conference & Exposition

Held in San Antonio, TX from June 4-7 is Safety 2023: an event hosted by the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) to connect safety professionals with a network of industry experts and the latest innovations.

The plenary session will touch on How We Can Lead Workplace Safety and Health in New Ways. Melissa Stockwell, US Veteran and Paralympian, will speak to The Power of Choice as well. Register here now.

ATHS National Convention & Truck Show

If trucks are your thing, you need to be at the American Truck Historical Society’s National Convention and Truck Show! From June 8-10 at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, NV, nearly 1,000 trucks and trailers will be on display. Informative speakers will cover interesting topics throughout the three-day event, including Developing a Plan for Your Project Truck and Finding Parts for It, and Air Systems: Overview and Troubleshooting, Parts 1 and 2.

TCA’s Annual Safety & Security Division

Taking place at the San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter in San Antonio, TX from June 11-13 is the Truckload Carriers Association’s (TCA) Safety & Security Meeting.

As an attendee, you’ll be invited to participate in “Safety in the Round” to actively solve common safety management and human-resource problems. Discussions usually touch on safety technologies, improving driver training programs, insurance and litigation best practices, and other key topics. Several other networking opportunities are available as well as learning about the industry’s latest products and services. You can register by clicking here.
