3 Reasons to File a DOT Number Application

Written by Foley | Nov 3, 2020 5:00:00 AM

At first glance, dealing with DOT regulations looks like it can be a bit of a long and winding road.  Fortunately, Foley is here to help at every turn, including navigating the paths of DOT compliance.

If you’re just starting a trucking company, this path starts with filing a  DOT number application.

First, what is a USDOT (or DOT) number?

A DOT number is an identification number that allows FMCSA (the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) to monitor a company’s safety record and other information acquired during inspections and audits. Any company that operates interstate commercial vehicles that transport either passengers or cargo, as well as all hazardous materials carriers with cargo that requires a safety permit, need to not only be registered with the FMCSA, but also have a USDOT number.

Sound complicated?  Don’t worry, that’s not surprising – it can all be daunting at first.  But if you do need a DOT number, it’s important that you have one.  Here are three reasons why you should have and know your DOT number:

1. Having a DOT Number is the Law

If you’re in the trucking industry there’s a very good chance that you need a USDOT number.  When do you need a DOT number?  Here’s the simple version:

If you’re involved in interstate commerce, and meet at least one of the following qualifications:

  • A gross vehicle weight or gross combination weight of 10,001 lbs or more
  • If your vehicle is designed or used to carry more than eight passengers, including the driver, for compensation
  • If your vehicle is designed or used to carry more than fifteen passengers, including the driver, regardless of compensation
  • If your vehicle is used to transport material found by the Secretary of Transportation to be hazardous

Then, according to federal law, you are required to have a DOT number.  Aside from these federal regulations, many states require you to have one anyway – so be aware of the DOT compliance in your area.

2. Having a DOT Number Helps Protect the Safety of Our Roadways

While it may not seem like it right away, having a USDOT number helps ensure the safety of you and your drivers.  The DOT number is used to monitor a company’s safety record, as well as other things like crash investigations, compliance reviews and drug and alcohol testing.  While the DOT compliance may feel restrictive at first, they are ultimately all a part of a program to keep you safe.

3. Having a DOT Number legitimizes your business

By having a USDOT number, both clients and other companies and drivers know that you are a trustworthy and willing to put time and effort into being safe.  It shows that you are a responsible and legitimate business.
